Choose a useful search area
Begin with the city connected to your incident, your home, or a convenient place to meet. If the initial results do not provide enough suitable options, compare another populated city in the same state. A listed office address does not tell you every place a firm serves, so ask directly.
- Is the listed office location current?
- Does the firm serve the place relevant to my matter?
- Can meetings or document exchange work for me?
Build a short list from actual fit
Choose a few firms to contact rather than assuming the first result is the best choice. A profile can show contact details, but it cannot establish current availability, the attorney who would work on your matter, or experience with your specific incident. Confirm those points with each firm.
- Does the firm handle this type of matter?
- Who would review and work on it?
- What information is needed for an initial assessment?
Verify before sharing sensitive records
Check the lawyer’s license with the relevant state attorney licensing authority. Use the firm’s confirmed intake channel for medical or financial documents. If details in a firm profile differ from the firm’s current information, ask the firm to clarify them.
- Have I checked attorney status with the licensing authority?
- Am I using the firm’s confirmed contact channel?
- Do I understand what documents the firm requested?
Compare the conversations
Ask each firm a similar set of questions. Record who would be your main contact, how updates are provided, what happens after the first call, and how fees and expenses are explained. Request the proposed fee terms in writing before deciding whether to hire a firm.
- Who is my contact and how often will I hear from them?
- What are the next steps if the firm accepts the matter?
- How are fees, expenses, and any other deductions described?
