What to do after a rideshare accident

Preserve the trip receipt, app status, pickup place, vehicles, and insurance contacts.

Save the complete trip

Keep the app receipt and screenshots showing pickup, route, drop-off, time, driver, and vehicle. If a crash happened before pickup or after drop-off, mark the exact point rather than describing the whole trip as one event.

Handle care and reporting first

Get medical care as needed and follow the local crash-reporting process. Save photos taken safely, witness details, police report number, and communications with the platform or driver.

Separate insurance questions

Coverage may depend on the vehicle, driver, trip status, policy terms, and state law. List each insurer and claim number. Avoid assuming that the company displayed in the app is the only relevant party.

Ask a firm about the evidence plan

Ask how it would obtain trip and policy records, identify the exact accident location, preserve footage, and explain fees and expenses before you sign anything.

First, protect health and safety

Get appropriate care and use the local crash-reporting process. Save the trip receipt and app screens before they become harder to retrieve. Note whether the event happened before pickup, during a trip, or after drop-off; do not infer coverage from that label alone.

Then build a reliable record

Keep screenshots showing the driver, car, plate, route, timestamps, pickup and drop-off pins, and relevant messages. Record other vehicles and witnesses separately. If a report was made through the platform, save its confirmation and the exact wording submitted.

Insurance and claim questions

Possible coverage can depend on the driver’s activity, trip status, policies, vehicle, and state law. A rideshare receipt helps reconstruct timing but is not itself an insurance decision. Ask who is communicating for each insurer and what any requested statement or release would do.
