01

Identify the policy before assuming coverage

Locate the declarations page and any claim correspondence. Write down the insurer, policy number, claim number, and the person each insurer represents. Coverage depends on policy terms and state rules, so a label alone cannot tell you what will be paid.

02

Distinguish common coverage questions

Liability coverage, personal injury protection, medical payments, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can address different circumstances. Ask an insurer or qualified local adviser which parts of a particular policy may apply and what exclusions or limits matter.

03

Track requests and responses

Keep a dated record of adjuster contacts and requests for documents, statements, authorizations, or releases. Confirm what a requested signature would do before signing. Save copies of anything you send.

04

Bring unanswered questions to a lawyer

Ask which policies may be relevant, how medical bills are being handled now, and whether another payer might later seek reimbursement. The answers depend on the facts, policy language, and jurisdiction.
