01

Care and immediate safety

Seek appropriate medical help and follow instructions from responders. Do not put yourself in danger to photograph a road. Reporting requirements vary by state, so use the local process that applies to the crash.

02

Preserve the basic record

Keep the date, exact road or intersection, directions of travel, vehicle and driver details, photos taken safely, witness names, and the police or incident report number. Separate what you saw from what others later told you.

03

Keep insurance communications organized

Record each insurer and claim number, who the insurer represents, what it requested, and what you sent. Before signing a release or giving an uncertain account, ask what the request means for your situation.

04

Prepare to compare firms

Ask who would review the crash, how the firm would preserve camera or vehicle records, which policies might matter, and which state deadlines should be checked. Request clear written fee and expense terms.
